It wasn’t long ago that the bursting of UAE’s real estate bubble put the world economy in a tizzy. With developed economies already in the throes of recession, this additional blow was difficult to digest. Indian real estate companies were feeling the pinch with prices crashing and not many buyers lining up at the doors of developers selling prime properties.

However, the real estate economy in India not only survived, but grew, thanks to a financial sector that was willing to lend to genuine buyers. World Bank President Robert Zoellick was quoted as saying that the high level of growth in India was helping the global economy recover. The year 2009-10 saw India grow at 7.4%, as against 6.7% in the previous year. Demand is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 19% between 2010 and 2014.

Much of the excitement about the Indian real estate sector has been due to FDIs—over 11% of FDI in India in 2010 was in real estate. Yet the flow of FDI has declined significantly, and this could be because of the legal and commercial difficulties in India. Keeping this in mind, the upcoming LegalEra Real Estate Conference, will concentrate on the real estate sector and laws relating to it, specially focusing on Restructuring Laws and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR).
